Whitchurch Primary School
About our school Whitchurch Primary School is smaller than average school. It is located in a suburban area within commuting distance of Bristol but which retains its own identity. Although the school is in Bath and North East Somerset it is very close to the boundary of Bristol and over half of the pupils come from there. The school provides education for children from the Foundation Stage through Key Stage 1 and up to the end of Key Stage 2. (Children in the Reception class are still at the Foundation Stage, which begins earlier with their nursery education). We see the fact that a child can remain with us from the age of 4 through to 11 as an advantage enabling us to build upon stability and continuity It is a Local Education Authority Community School housed in a single storey building, built around an open quadrangle. Over the years the building has been developed and extended. Recently huge improvements have taken place; two so-called ‘mobile’ classrooms sited in the playgrounds were replaced by a smart new wing, housing purpose built classroom for Year 1 and Foundation Stage, which also incorporates a well-equipped play area. The new entrance and Reception area at the opposite end of the building provides a secure but attractive waiting area for visitors. This extension also includes new well-equipped offices for the Headteacher and Secretary, as well as new cloakroom facilities for staff and visitors and more storage space. The large hall is used for a wide variety of activities, including PE, music, drama, school assemblies and school meals. As well as their own classroom, children are also taught in the fully-equipped ICT suite and have timetabled use of a well-resourced Library. There is also a music room (used for small group-work as well) and a large outdoor area, comprising hard surface playgrounds and a playing field with designated conservation areas and a pond. The vast majority of pupils are of White British heritage and there are none for whom English is an additional language. The school is part of a Learning Network with five other local schools. Additionally, it has curriculum links with three secondary schools developing science and technology, sports and the arts. One of these secondary schools is developing extended school provision which benefits pupils at the school. It has gained the International Schools Award and has links with a number of schools throughout Europe and in Uganda. The school’s aim is to make the school as attractive as possible so that children, parents and staff can appreciate their environment and find it conducive to work and aesthetic development. The well-being and safeguarding of all children is of paramount importance and is the responsibility of all adults.
