 Introduction and Welcome:

  • Sonia Tibbatts welcomed everybody to the school and gave an outline of the programme for the three days.

  • Everybody introduced themselves; name, country and occupation.

Survey:

  • Each country presented the results of the reading survey (see surveys)

  • Results of survey were discussed. Similar results were found among the countries. Differences were mainly in where children get their books from.  Group was most interested to find that most children read to find information rather than for pleasure. Boys enjoyed reading less than girls and spent less time reading across all countries.

  • Reading resources were shared.

Spain:

  • Explained that by the age of 5 children read perfectly.

  • Children have booklets for each letter of the alphabet that they learn. They make words with this letter, practice handwriting and draw pictures associated with the word.

  • They have a class newspaper which the children are encouraged to read and write in.

  • Children have a ‘traveller’s tale’ within the school, each pupil has a story which they share with someone in another class.

  • They also make their own stories based on stories learned in class.

  • Children also make comics.

England:

  • Various resources used to teach reading were shown, reading comprehension books, assessment papers, big books and guided reading packs.

  • ‘Read/Write INC.’ a new phonics based program to teach reading was introduced and resources shown and explained.
