Teaching Methods of

C. R. A. Manuel Moreno Blanco School

At Istanbul meeting, we showed some resources that teacher in our schools use in their reading teaching lessons.

Three are the different methods developed by them:

  • Syllabic Method: it’s the one which splits from the phoneme and goes on joining that phoneme to every vowel (e.g. “m” with “a” is “ma”), so pupils can form different words. This method follows  up some stages: first, read the pupils a tale related to the phoneme (e.g. “M, the milkman”), display, work on the writing, etc…

  • Global Method: on the other hand, this begins with the whole word, and from it, pupils will discover and so analyse each phoneme that belong to the word.

In this method, the main aim will be that the children have the intention to write and read, all this respecting their natural rhythm. The steps that this method follows are: 1) the image; 2) image + word; 3)only the word; 4) from the word to the different phonemes, combined with the five vowels.

  • Grimace Method: it is used in our school when children have learning difficulties. Each consonant is associated to one grimace.  What it is primordial is each sound’s articulation, not the syllable.

In Spain, the Government is trying to develop a Reading Encouragement Project, which is compulsory for all schools in our country.

Then some of the teachers made up our minds, and so we made a Neobook presentation, in which we tried to show different reading activities, from Nursery years to year 6 of Primary Education.

Some of those activities are the following:

-The Traveller Tale: a child begins a tale, and it passes through the others, so that everyone adds one part of the story. A picture is also attached. This activity is developed in year 3 and 4 (8 and 9 years old children). When the tale is finished, it is used by the eldest in the school for them to develop a “critical reading”.

-The Chained Tale: children are given a list of words, and they have to develop a story taking into account those words. These kind of tales are also used by the eldest ones, as they do with the Traveller Tales.

-Bookmarks: in Pre-School, when pupils are 3, 4 and 5, they do some works related to reading. For example, bookmarks. They paint a famous tale character (e.g. one of the 7 dwarfs, Harry Potter, Snowhite, …) and if they can, they can write the name as well.

-Illustration: children are given a poem, a song, a short tale, an advertisement, etc… and they have to illustrate it.

-Comic: they are creators as well. They can do a comic, based on an important event at school.

-Storytelling: pupils enjoy this a lot. Also when it is an illustrator who comes to our school to spend a couple of hours with children.
